Cellar Spotlight: Allison M. from WA

Meet Issaquah Wine Store Manager Allison M.

Today, we’re sharing an interview with our Issaquah, WA Wine Cellar Manager, Allison M! She’s discussing how she got started with The Wine Cellar Group, some of her favorite experiences at work and what’s ahead for her.

How did you get started at The Wine Cellar Group?

I started working here as a part-time position to compliment the hours of another job I was working. I was previously a dance instructor and choreographer working with all age groups. The calm, organized environment of the Wine Cellar was a welcome, yin and yang balance for me.

Tell us about a time you saw your work at the wine store make an impact.

One of my favorite in-store experiences was when a soon-to-be married couple came into the store an hour before closing. Their wedding was planned for that weekend, but something about their venue had changed last minute. They were now in desperate need to find wine for their reception to cater over 120 guests! We pulled out all the stops to figure out which wines would best complement their menu. We opened several bottles from our wine selection for the couple to sample and whittled it down to their top choices. At the end of the evening, they had selected over 8 cases worth of wine. I cannot tell you how ecstatic they were to watch the price drastically drop after we applied our discounts! They came back a month or so later, as happy newlyweds.

Where do you see yourself in five years?

Actually, can I let you in on something exciting? I just bought my very first house! I’m ecstatic and cannot wait to start working on it and make it feel like home. There is a lot of work to be done, but I’m up for the challenge. I purchased it with thoughts of the future in mind; getting married to my significant other, children, things of that nature. Exciting things are on the rise.

What is the best piece of advice you’ve been given?

Believe it or not, I was a professional Ballet and Modern dancer both before and during college. My first Artistic Director’s catchphrase was always, “Think, don’t stink.” and honestly, I think that’s a pretty good motto to get behind.

What is your favorite varietal for the summer?

Oh, good question. I have a lot of favorites, but I must stick to my gut on this one and say any kind of Portuguese blend. I love the inky, dark, earthiness of them and I have yet to find one that I dislike. I know a lot of people switch to whites and Rosé for the summer season, but I guess I am just the outlier. Lobo e Falcão Reserva is a full-bodied red with black cherry and toasty spice aromas that pairs well with aged cheese and is great on a summer evening.
