What Are Organic Wines?
“Organic” refers to the grape-growing and wine making process. An organic wine must be made with at least 95% organically produced ingredients. That means using only organically grown grapes—which involves no pesticides or herbicides in the growing process—and not including artificial additives, like sulfites.
Keep in mind that any wine contains a small amount of natural sulfites to maintain freshness and enhance flavor. A wine must contain less than 10 ppm (parts per million) of natural sulfites to be considered organic.
What To Look For When Buying Organic Wine
When shopping for organic wine, it’s helpful to understand how to read a wine label. You’ll first want to look for the USDA organic label on the bottle. A winemaker must become a certified organic vineyard for its wines to be labeled as organic. Some wines are technically organic but don’t feature the USDA organic label. That occurs when a winemaker doesn’t want to go through the process of becoming certified as organic.
Wine bottles labeled as “made with organic grapes” aren’t necessarily fully organic, “with” being the key term. These bottles meet the first criteria for an organic wine (i.e. being made with organically grown grapes) but may not meet the second criteria (i.e. containing less than 10 ppm of natural sulfites and including no added sulfites).
