Spooky season is upon us and what better way to celebrate than with a halloween wine some of our favorite candy to indulge in? In preparation for our upcoming in-store Halloween Wine Sampling, our Oak Brook Cellar Supervisor, Josh K. WSET III, has compiled a list of classic Halloween candies to try with our scary delicious fall wines. Besides, as adults we deserve a little fun – we’ll take the tasty treats.
Sparkling Wine and Pop Rocks
Pop Rocks introduced us to fizz way before we could enjoy a refreshing glass of bubbly. Experience a mouthwatering and explosive combination with this fun and delicious wine pairing. Hosting a party? Rim each of the glasses with Pop Rocks and then fill with bubbly. Watch as your guests are transported back to their childhood with each sip!
Cellar Collection Suggestions:
Rosé and Skittles
These fruity and chewy treats are best accompanied by a Rosé with citrus forward notes. This will lead to a light and refreshing combination in your mouth. Bonus – the acidity from the wine is just what you need to cut the chewiness from the candy! Watch as each of the different candy flavors brings out new notes in the wine.
Cellar Collection Suggestions:
Chardonnay and Candy Corn
Okay we know – not everyone loves candy corn, and even the mention of Chardonnay brings up the big debate of oaked or unoaked! Candy corn is a classic Halloween candy that is known for its sweetness and waxy texture. There’s no better pairing than an oaky and buttery Chardonnay. This medium-bodied wine will soften the sugar flavors from the candy corn. The wine’s richness is exactly what you need when enjoying an extremely sweet candy like this!
Cellar Collection Suggestions:
Red Blend and Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups
When it comes to the holidays, Reese’s never fails to turn their classic peanut butter cups into a shape that is oh so delicious and well, festive! Pair your pumpkin shaped treat with a full-bodied red blend. The fruity and intense flavors from the wine complement the nuttiness of the peanut butter. Chocolate and red wine are always a classic go-to candy pairing. Did you know that chocolate also has tannins in it?!
Cellar Collection Suggestions:
Cabernet and Hershey’s
Hershey’s is a fan-favorite that never goes out of style. This melt-in-your-mouth chocolate pairs well with a rich, dark fruit flavored Cabernet. The fruity notes in the wine will contrast with the creaminess of the chocolate. Now the real question is, Hershey’s Milk or Dark?
